How Many Toilets Does A Restaurant Need By Law?
The number of toilets required in a restaurant is determined by customer capacity and governed by the Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992 alongside Building Regulations Part G. As a general guide, a restaurant with up to 50 covers requires a minimum of one male and one female toilet. Above that threshold, provision scales with capacity. Separate accessible toilet facilities are also required under Part M of the Building Regulations. We cover the full breakdown in our guide to restaurant toilet requirements.
Do Restaurants Have To Provide Toilets For Customers?
Yes. Restaurants are legally required to provide toilet facilities for customers under the Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992. The facilities must be adequately ventilated, lit and maintained. Staff and customer facilities can be shared in smaller premises, but must be sufficient for the number of people using the building.
What Is Included In A Restaurant Toilet Refurbishment?
A restaurant toilet refurbishment covers the full transformation of an existing washroom space. This typically includes new toilet cubicles, vanity units, flooring, wall finishes, plumbing updates, lighting and ventilation, plus any electrical work such as hand dryers or heating. We handle every stage from initial design through to final inspection, so the space is handed over ready to use.
How Long Does A Restaurant Toilet Fit Out Take?
Timescales depend on the size and condition of the existing space, but most restaurant toilet fit outs are completed within one to two weeks. We work around your trading hours where possible to minimise disruption to the business. Your dedicated project manager will give you a clear programme at the start of the project.
Do You Need To Provide A Disabled Toilet In A Restaurant?
Yes. Building Regulations Part M requires accessible toilet provision in premises open to the public, including restaurants. An accessible cubicle must meet minimum dimension requirements and include the appropriate grab rails, fixtures and turning space for wheelchair users. If your existing washroom does not include an accessible facility, we can design one into a refurbishment or fit out project.
What Should A Restaurant Toilet Design Include?
A well-designed restaurant toilet should reflect the brand and atmosphere of the dining space while meeting the practical demands of a high-turnover hospitality environment. Key considerations include durable, easy-clean surface finishes, adequate ventilation given the proximity to a kitchen, sufficient cubicle numbers for peak covers, accessible provision and vanity units that are robust enough for continuous daily use. Our design team works with each client to balance aesthetics with the functional requirements specific to hospitality settings.
Can You Refurbish Restaurant Toilets Without Closing The Restaurant?
Yes, so long as the toilets can be isolated from the main trading area.
However, every case is different. So, before starting your project, we will discuss access and trading requirements with you. Doing so helps you plan accordingly, whether the best option is to keep your restaurant open or closed during the works.
